Translating Songs: Methods, Strategies and A Didactic Proposal
There is very little literature in translation and musicology that focuses on the translation
of song lyrics. However, this type of subordinate translation poses exciting challenges and
activates specific translation strategies that deserve to be studied in greater depth. This study
offers a broad perspective on the specific challenges that the translation of songs represents.
Awareness of these problems is a key factor for professionals striving to succeed in such
an endeavor. Firstly, we examine the different positions of the experts who have studied
the field of song translation throughout history, as well as the different modalities of music
translation. The characteristics and difficulties presented by this kind of subordinate translation
are then analyzed. Secondly, the musical work The Stranger Song by Leonard Cohen,
versioned in Spanish as Canción del Extranjero by Nacho Vegas, is the focus of our study
and the song used to exemplify the translation methodology proposed. A practical analysis of
the song is carried out both from a translational and a musicological perspective with special
emphasis on the musical, metrics and translation strategies used by the translator. Finally, we also present a translation teaching methodology that facilitates the musical-translation
analysis conducted in the classroom

Lexical and reading comprehension processes in Secondary School students
Reading comprehension is a complex process that requires both the “construction” and the “integration” of information, making it an interactive process that involves a wide variety of mental processes. This fact implies a great heterogeneity of difficulties in reading comprehension. The aim of this study consists of analyzing the possible differences in lexical and reading comprehension processes among a group of students with reading comprehension difficulties and another group of students without these difficulties. The participants of this study were 84 adolescents (42 with reading comprehension difficulties and 42 without them) from 12 to 16 years of age enrolled in the stage of compulsory secondary education. The results show that the information is processed differently in both groups. The main differences are obtained in lexical processes as well as understanding explicit ideas and making anaphoric inferences. The purpose of this paper is to design interventions that meet the needs of students with reading comprehension difficulties.peerReviewe
Transfers of Care between Healthcare Professionals in Obstetric Units of Different Sizes across Spain and in a hospital in Ireland : the MidconBirth Study
Abstract: Background: In Europe, the majority of healthy women give birth at conventional obstetric units with the assistance of registered midwives. This study examines the relationships between the intrapartum transfer of care (TOC) from midwife to obstetrician-led maternity care, obstetric unit size (OUS) with different degrees of midwifery autonomy, intrapartum interventions and birth outcomes. Methods: A prospective, multicentre, cross-sectional study promoted by the COST Action IS1405 was carried out at eight public hospitals in Spain and Ireland between 2016-2019. The primary outcome was TOC. The secondary outcomes included type of onset of labour, oxytocin stimulation, epidural analgesia, type of birth, episiotomy/perineal injury, postpartum haemorrhage, early initiation of breastfeeding and early skin-to-skin contact. A logistic regression was performed to ascertain the effects of studied co-variables on the likelihood that participants had a TOC; Results: Out of a total of 2,126 low-risk women, those whose intrapartum care was initiated by a midwife (1772) were selected. There were statistically significant differences between TOC and OUS (S1 = 29.0%, S2 = 44.0%, S3 = 52.9%, S4 = 30.2%, p < 0.001). Statistically differences between OUS and onset of labour, oxytocin stimulation, type of birth and episiotomy or perineal injury were observed (p = 0.009, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 respectively); Conclusions: Findings suggest that the model of care and OUS have a significant effect on the prevalence of intrapartum TOC and the birth outcomes. Future research should examine how models of care differ as a function of the OUS in a hospital, as well as the cost-effectiveness for the health care system
Reading and oral comprehension: relations with iq, gender and academic performance of Primary School students
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between reading and oral comprehension of primary school students, considering their IQ, their gender, and their academic performance. The students were enrolled in a state school located in the Valencian community where there are different linguistics programs, known as PIP and PIL. The Raven Test and the reading and oral comprehension Prolec-R tasks were provided. The academic performance of the students was also tested in the last term regarding the areas of Mathematics, Spanish and Science. The results showed statistically significant differences between the performance of reading and oral comprehension considering the IQ, and discarding differences between gender, age and the main language of the classroom. The different correlations between these variables and academic performance are also explained. These results reaffirm the relationship between IQ, reading and oral comprehension, and show other relationships to be considered in future studies.peerReviewe
Five-year diagnostic stability among adolescents in an inpatient psychiatric unit
Introduction: In childhood, diagnoses made at the first admission to a psychiatric unit are frequently unstable and temporary. In this study, we examined the stability of DSM-IV-TR disorders and groups of disorders among adolescents followed-up for 5 years after hospitalization. Method: All inpatients admitted for the first time between 2007 and 2008 were included and contacted after 5 years for re-evaluation. The final sample comprised 72 patients. At admission, diagnoses were based on the DSM-IV-TR criteria, Fourth Edition. At five years, diagnoses were made using structured clinical interviews for DSM-IV axis I Disorders and for axis II (SCID-I and SCID-II) as well as the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire, Fourth Edition (PDQ-4). We also evaluated and collected information on the global assessment of functioning using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument. Depending on the distribution of variables, we used the chi-squared and Fisher exact tests or the Student t and McNemar tests for statistical analyses. Results: The most stable diagnoses were schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Tourette syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder. The most unstable diagnoses were disruptive disorders. Participants were satisfied with their quality of life and the global outcomes of the sample were positive. Conclusion: Major psychiatric disorders, including mood and schizophrenia spectrum disorders, were significantly more stable than other diagnoses and tended to continue into adulthood. In the case of study participants, suffering a mental disorder during adolescence did not appear to affect global functioning outcomes
The sigma-1 receptor curtails endogenous opioid analgesia during sensitization of TRPV1 nociceptors
Background and Purpose: Peripheral sensitization contributes to pathological pain. While prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nerve growth factor (NGF) sensitize peptidergic C-nociceptors (TRPV1+), glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) sensitizes non-peptidergic C-neurons (IB4+). Sigma-1 receptor (σ1R) is a Ca2+-sensing chaperone known to modulate analgesia induced by opioid drugs. This receptor binds both to TRPV1 and the µ-opioid receptor (MOPr), although the functional repercussions of these physical interactions in peripheral sensitization are unknown.
Experimental Approach: We tested the effect of sigma-1 antagonism on PGE2-, NGF- and GDNF-induced mechanical and heat hyperalgesia in mice. We used immunohistochemistry to determine the presence of endomorphin-2, an endogenous MOPr agonist, on dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Recombinant proteins were used to study the interactions between σ1R, MOPr and TRPV1. We used calcium imaging to study the effects of sigma-1 antagonism on PGE2-induced sensitization of TRPV1+ nociceptors.
Key Results: σ1R antagonists reversed PGE2- and NGF-induced hyperalgesia, but not GDNF-induced hyperalgesia. Endomorphin-2 was detected on TRPV1+ but not on IB4+ neurons. Peripheral opioid receptor antagonism by naloxone methiodide or administration of an anti-endomorphin-2 antibody to a sensitized paw, reversed the antihyperalgesia induced by sigma-1 antagonists. Sigma-1 antagonism transfers σ1R from TRPV1 to MOPr, suggesting that σ1R participate in TRPV1-MOPr crosstalk. Moreover, σ1R antagonism reversed, in a naloxone-sensitive manner, PGE2-induced sensitization of DRG neurons to the calcium flux elicited by capsaicin, the prototypic TRPV1 agonist.
Conclusion and Implications: σ1R antagonism harnesses endogenous opioids produced by TRPV1+ neurons to reduce hyperalgesia by increasing MOPr activity
